Candle Burning Safety Wisdom

*NEVER leave a burning candle unattended!
*DO NOT burn near flammable objects such as curtains, lamps, shades, mattresses, cabinets, or blankets! I give a minimum of 1.5 feet clearance around all sides of the candle.
*Candles can become hot enough to damage furniture...Burn ONLY on nonflammable surfaces such as stone, metal, or glass.
*Hot wax burns! DO NOT move a hot or burning candle.
*Keep candles away from children and pets.
*Keep candles free of foreign materials (built of wax or hair, matches, or wick clippings).
*Candles should be burned out of drafts. Turn candles 1/4inch before relighting for an even burn pool.
*Clip you wick!
*Clip your wick!
*Clip you wick!

*Burn votive candles and candles of similar size in a tight fitting holder. They are not meant to be free standing. As votives burn they will liquefy and turn into a pool of wax which meeds to be contained. *A wick left untrimmed on a votive may bend. If the burning wick comes in contact with the glass holder it will weaken the glass and may cause it to break.
*Discontinue burning when 1/2" wax remains for votives candles or containers.
*Do burn any candle if the conatainer is cracked.

*Pillars shoould be burned on a nonflammable plate/container. The plate/container should be large enough to accommodate the size of pillar candle. Sand makes an excellant container filler to set the candle in and can also be decorative. *When first burning a pillar candle you need to establish a 'burn pattern'. Wax has a memory. Let the candle burn until the burn pool is 1/4" from the edge. Extinguish the candle and let harden before relighting. If you do this a few times, the pattern will be set. *Burn pillar candles for 1 hour per inch in diameter. *CLIP Your WICK! This is one of the best things you can do to keep your candle burning at its optimum capacity. Keep wicks clipped to 1/4". A longer wick will cause the candle to smoke and have a high flame. DO NOT use fingers to clip wicks. DO NOT leave wick trimmings in the candle. Discard in the garbage when appropriate. You may want to have a scissors just for clipping wicks! *After extinguishing a candle, trim and straighten the wick. *Discontinue burning pillars when 2 inches of wax remains. *In order to extinguish your candle, snuff your candle out as opposed to blowing them out. Blowing out your candles may allow lit pieces of wick to land on something that is flammable! Do not blow out candles!

To enjoy a candle you need to be there! Remember, if you go out...extinguish all candles! One easy and creative idea I recommend for every home is to make a decorative sign to be hung by doorways which reminds you to check the house for any lit candles.

One final and most important reminder! Candles are a beautiful, relaxing, pleasurable, and comforting light especially during the long dark hours of winter. They are also a viable 'living' entity which needs respect and constant attention. Please follow these simple tips in order to have a wonderful, and most importantly, a safe experience.
